Assemblymember Greg Wallis has introduced Assembly Concurrent Resolution 8 (ACR 8) in Sacramento, aiming to establish the second Saturday of January as World Desert Day in California.

“Deserts are among the most vibrant yet least understood ecosystems,” stated Assemblymember Wallis. He emphasized their importance, noting that deserts “are home to unique species like the desert tortoise and are vital to California’s ecological health and biodiversity.” Wallis also highlighted the threats these landscapes face from habitat destruction and climate change.

The resolution’s introduction marks a step towards raising awareness about desert ecosystems and their conservation needs.
